Case Study

The essence of Festival de Cannes: Illuminate. Discover. Bask. The sun is the symbol of choice for this event. The sun illuminates, is glorious, significant, and enables discovery as the festival does. One can bask in the sun as one can bask in the festivities, heat, luxury, and glory of Cannes. The sun conveys glory, significance, and a brightness that is too great for anyone from the outside to understand or even see clearly—it is mysterious. With its round shape, the sun can embody or be embodied by filming equipment such as a lens, aperture, or lighting equipment. The emotions that the sun conveys are that of awe, wonder, enchantment, and desire. ​

Sketches & Conceptual Drafts

After my conceptual and style directions were chosen, I began sketching visual forms  to use as part of the design system. I sketched both icons and layout studies. From those sketches and feedback, I pursued a few of them digitally. I experimented with various media, getting feedback and re-working until the designs were resolved.

Video Storyboard

The video opens with the sun aperture icon closed. The sun aperture gradually opens. Once open, the camera zooms out a little bit and the type is revealed. The camera zooms into a portion of the sun aperture and the type is revealed. The camera zooms out and reveals the entire aperture sun and the type.​
